Spread Of Light
The fidelity of the light spectrum is critical, but it's not the only thing that matters. If the beam is too narrow, you will have to constantly adjust your reading materials under the light. Too wide, and you may find the beam causes disturbance to others.
Shining a light on beam spread

What Is Spread Of Light?
Spread of light, also called beam spread, refers to the area a light covers. As light moves away from the surface it is directed at, or the beam width is made wider, it spreads out and becomes less intense. For example, if you take a torch and move it closer to and further away from a wall, the intensity and spread of the light changes.
When you move the torch further away from the wall, the beam becomes wider but the level of brightness it produces hasn’t changed. It’s still just as bright, it’s simply dispersing the light differently.
Regardless of the size of the beam angle, it is the intensity of the beam (which is measured in candelas) that changes. The level of brightness (measured in lumens) stays the same.

Why Is It important?
The accuracy of the visible spectrum is important when it comes to lighting, but it's not the only thing that matters. The shape and spread of the beam itself is an important consideration when choosing a light—whether it be for reading books or larger publications, enjoying a hobby that involves close-up work and focus, or indulging in a beloved pastime where colour and detail are key.
Continually moving your eyes back and forth between well- and poorly-lit areas puts strain on your eyes, therefore it is important that your light projects a beam that covers the entirety of what you're working on, whether it's a gripping novel or your latest work of art.

Choosing The Right Light For The Job
Each Serious Light range has a different beam width, catering for a variety of needs, preferences and hobbies.
The Classic Light features an intentionally narrow beam, making it a fantastic choice as a bedside companion for reading standard paperback-sized books.
The Alex Light beam is wider and brighter, making it great not only for reading your favourite page-turner, but also larger publications such as textbooks, magazines and newspapers, as well as sheet music.
The newly upgraded High Definition Light has a fully adjustable beam for ultimate control allowing you to switch between the widest beam for jigsaws, artwork and broadsheets, and a more focussed beam for book reading.
