The blood test that could give an early warning of AMD
Monday 27 November 2017Patients with any stage of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) carry signs of the disease in their blood. And scientists from the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary now believe they have discovered a lab test which could identify potential sufferers before the onset of symptoms.
Macular Degeneration is the leading cause of blindness worldwide, and it is estimated one in 10 pensioners in the UK have some degree of the disease. By 2020, it is predicted almost 700,000 people will be affected.
AMD is currently incurable, and the new findings offer hope of an earlier diagnosis when drugs may prevent its onset. A blood test could potentially offer screening both for older people and those most at risk – including smokers and those with a family history of the disease.
