New lighting mimics caffeine effect
Thursday 05 April 2018Lighting engineers at Philips have created a form of office lighting which, they claim, will boost energy levels in the same way as drinking a cup of coffee. The system, installed in an office in the Czech Republic, is tuned into the circadian rhythms of staff, and is set to stimulate energy levels when they flag and promote “wind-down” before rest periods.
The system comprises over 2,000 LED lights, over 1,000 of which are tuneable. The tuneable lights are programmed for different points of the day. But in addition to this, subtle differences in colour temperature and intensity - the factors which dictate eye comfort - can be personalized to suit specific tasks. The system can be overridden at any time by employees.
Philips say they have taken what they have learned from projects in hospitals and schools to produce a system which provides similar physiological benefits to employees in a working environment.
