The gift of light
People kept asking us for a small and lightweight tool to carry better light with them. Both of these lights are cordless, operate on the mains or by battery, and are built around our Daylight Wavelength Technology™. Both are very handy in a power cut.
HD Mini
Compact and rechargeable, it projects a precise, intense beam, and different people can pick it up and use it for different things around your house: see the recipe in your kitchen, read in a dark nook or bring light to a problem in the dark, like a leak under the sink. It has made many appearances on the BBC’s The Repair Shop.

“Shall end up with one of these in every room.”Mrs Burr, London
Not just for reading
We have been supplying the lights needed by professionals who have to see well for decades, from air traffic controllers to ship captains and fine art restorers.
For a professional stamp valuer, the right light is an essential part of seeing what is really there. Colour fidelity, contrast and precision beam projection all affect how clearly you can see subtle shades, postmarks and fine printed detail. That logic applies to your reading, sewing, model-making and many other pastimes that we take seriously.

“I wouldn’t rely on any other light.”George James, Head of Philately at Stanley Gibbons, trusted by stamp collectors since 1856
The darker evenings are now upon us, so why deny yourself or a loved one the joy of better light?

The difference the right light makes
You sit down with a book, but the print is harder to follow than it was outside. At the kitchen table, two different colours can look the same, and you may find a painting, your sewing or a crossword harder work than it should be. The room may be bright, but the light on what you are doing is likely wrong.
Brightness is only the beginning. The make-up of the light also determines how clearly you can distinguish colour, contrast, texture and fine detail. It matters where the beam falls, whether it creates glare, and whether you can position it to suit your eyes and the task in front of you. Two lights can seem equally bright yet feel entirely different to use.

We have spent forty years on this question. When our founder’s mother asked him for a better reading light, he bought thirty-seven lamps and found thirty-seven compromises. Some lit the room, while others left the page in shadow. Some were difficult to position, while others made colours look flat. What she needed was a better light, so she could read and sew in comfort.
We still build every light with that need in mind. A Serious Light combines a bespoke light source with high grade optics that precisely control the beam and its direction, so you can put high definition light just where you need it. Colour fidelity is part of the design, so you can see subtle differences you would miss under poor light.
Find your place on the page and stay longer with the story. Choose the right paint colour, finish the stitch or see that important detail you were looking for. The light takes the strain, so your eyes don’t have to.
All light is not created equal.
“It makes my other lights look yellow and dimmer. How nice to be able to read in such marvellous light.”Mr McDowall, Surrey
A better lit life
Victoria Clifford is no ordinary puzzler. She is a world championship competitor who specialises in challenges. In a hobby where the tiniest variations in colour are incredibly important, having the right light can be the difference between winning and losing.
Victoria uses a High Definition Light that she takes from room to room, so she can complete puzzles anywhere in her home.
“I just get the light out and easily puzzle. I don’t have to squint and strain my eyes. The adjustability of the beam and the dimming feature means that I can create my own little light bubble.”Victoria Clifford, world championship puzzler
“Having acquired two of the lamps my life has been transformed and the joy of reading restored.”Mrs Baker, West Midlands
