Your body relies on six foundations. How would you rank them?

Rank them by how much the quality of each affects you over the long term, most important first. It takes a minute, and the result surprises most people.

I have a High Definition ROAM reading light to give away.

One light · entries close 14 October · drawn 21 October

A woman reading in bed by a High Definition ROAM on the bedside table

      Worth £99.99High Definition ROAM

It is cordless, so you can read by it in a chair nowhere near a socket. It runs for four and a half hours on a charge, and the neck bends to put the light where you want it on your book rather than across the room. Leave your first name and your email and I will put you in the draw.

You can enter without ticking the box and it makes no difference to the draw. We use your name and email to run the draw and to tell you if you win, we delete entries three months afterwards, and we never ring you unless you ask us to. Ticking the box is the only thing that puts you on our mailing list.

The big health surveys do not even include light.

When 30,000 people in 13 countries were asked what matters most for a long and healthy life, sleep came first, diet second, exercise third. Light was not even offered as an answer.

      Why might light seem last?

Light is so familiar that most people only notice it when it is gone. You read the same line twice, or carry your book over to the window, and blame your eyes.

At 60 your eyes need up to three times more light to read comfortably than they did at 20. The change is so slow that most people put it down to tiredness, when much of it is simply the light.

Brightness is only half of it. An ordinary bulb only looks white: it leaves gaps across the colours it makes, and your eyes work hard to fill them in. Daylight has no gaps, which is why reading by a window on a clear morning is easy. Daylight Wavelength Technology™ rebuilds that spectrum at 98% accuracy.

“I have asked this question for forty years. Light still comes last almost every time. I believe this is simply because we don’t immediately feel the powerful chronic impacts of poor light in the way we notice a bad night’s sleep, but it is just as impactful.”
