Sewing and needlework lights
Dark thread on dark fabric? See every stitch.
Thread your needle, count your stitches and match your colours on a dark evening as easily as you do by a sunny window, with a sewing lamp that rebuilds the full spectrum of daylight. The HD Original gives you up to 12x more light on your work than a 60W bulb, at 98% colour accuracy, and you set its beam and brightness to suit your eyes.

Your stitches stand out when you switch on.
When stitches get harder to see in the evening, most people put it down to their eyes, and sew a little less each winter without ever deciding to. In forty years of making lights for close work, we have found the cause is usually the light. Here are three differences owners describe.

You can thread your needle easily again.
Dark stitches on dark fabric are easy to see, and so are the holes in your aida. On the HD Original and HD Pro, one turn of the ring focuses the beam on your stitch.

You can match your threads at ten at night.
Daylight Wavelength Technology™ gives you colour 98% as true as daylight, so close shades look different and the colours you match tonight still match in the morning.

You can keep stitching for as long as you like.
Dim it to suit your eyes and it comes back at that level next time. The arm holds the light exactly where you put it and is guaranteed for life.
The Serious Readers story
I built the first HD Light for my mum.
By 1988 the lights we made were already on production lines and in laboratories, and then my mum began losing her sight to macular degeneration. I built her the first High Definition home reading light so she could carry on reading, and stay independent.
Every light on this page descends from hers. You do not build a cheap lamp for your mum; you build the best one you can, and then you spend forty years making it better. That is still the rule for every light we make, and it is why we take the detail in your work more seriously than anyone.
This is the difference on your sewing pattern.
The light from an ordinary bulb looks white, but it leaves gaps across the spectrum, most of all in the reds, so dark thread disappears into dark fabric and close shades look alike. We call that junk light. Daylight has no gaps, and Daylight Wavelength Technology™ rebuilds that full spectrum at 98% colour accuracy, flicker-free, which is why you see more under a daylight sewing lamp than under any stronger bulb.

Customers living with AMD and cataracts tell us print looks sharper and higher in contrast under one. The home trial lets you check that against your own eyes and your own work.
Choose my sewing lampBuilt to be the best we can make.
If you want the cheapest lamp, a Serious Light is not for you. It is a reliable tool for people who want the best light.
Serious Lights have been chosen for operating theatres, the British Museum and the Heathrow control tower, where fine detail and true colour matter. A warranty is only worth the company standing behind it, and ours has been building and repairing these lights for forty years. In 2025/26 alone we repaired or upgraded 1,350 of them.
A five-year warranty on the light, with a replaceable light engine inside it.
A lifetime warranty on the arm. The flexible arm holds wherever you bend it, for good.
The HD Original and HD Essential are hand-built in Aylesbury, around fifty a day. When something goes wrong, we repair it or we replace it.

HD Original
This is the light we recommend: everything we have learned in forty years, in one light. Narrow the beam onto your needle or widen it across your quilt, dim it to the level that suits your eyes, and both are just as you left them at your next switch-on, so the light is right the moment you pick up your work.

All sight is light.
Every moment of sight begins with light. When the light on your work improves, colours look richer, the contrast between thread and fabric is clearer, and close work takes less effort.
Every moment of sight begins with light, and the better the light on your work, the less effort your sewing takes.
Under an ordinary lamp, navy thread can look black.
More light on its own does not fix it. Most lamps use an ordinary bulb that gives out only part of the daylight spectrum, so colours look wrong, contrast is flat and your eyes work harder to pick out each stitch. That is junk light.

Fine detail looks sharp under true daylight, indoors.
Daylight Wavelength Technology™ rebuilds the full spectrum of noon daylight with 98% colour accuracy, so dark thread stands out against dark fabric, right down to the smallest stitch. See the independent research.
Point the light exactly where your needle is.
The head swivels through 350 degrees, so you can bring the beam in over your shoulder or straight down onto your hoop. Slow-start technology fades it up gently when you switch on, and the head stays exactly where you aimed it while you work.

What people who sew ask us before they order.
Here are the questions we hear most often.
Which is the best light for sewing?
For most people it is the HD Original, and it is the light most of our customers choose. You can narrow its beam for cross stitch and fine hand sewing or widen it across a dress pattern, dim it without steps, and it keeps both settings for next time, so it suits almost any needlework.
Choose the HD Pro if you want the remote or the cordless battery, or the HD Essential if you want the simplest of the three, with a fixed wide beam. All three are in the Serious Lights for sewing and needlework range, and all three carry the same daylight spectrum.
Will I be able to see dark thread on dark fabric?
For most people, yes. An ordinary bulb is short of parts of the spectrum, the reds most of all, so dark colours run together and dark thread is hard to pick out against dark fabric. Daylight Wavelength Technology™ rebuilds daylight with 98% colour accuracy, so you can see each stitch against the cloth and pick the right shade first time.
Narrow the beam on the HD Original or HD Pro and you also get up to 12x more light on your work than a 60W bulb.
Will it help with macular degeneration or cataracts?
Serious Lights are not medical devices, and they do not treat any eye condition. What they do is put far more usable light, in true colour, on your work.
Customers living with AMD, cataracts and poor eyesight tell us print looks sharper and higher in contrast under one. The home trial lets you find out with your own eyes, on your own sewing, and you can read more about lights for eye conditions too.
How bright is it, in numbers?
Measured at 50cm, the HD Original and HD Pro put up to 7,200 lux on your work with the beam narrowed for cross stitch or a dark seam, which is up to 12x more light on your work than a 60W bulb. Spread the HD Original's beam wide for knitting or a quilt and it holds 3,600 lux. Colour accuracy is 98% CRI, which is why your colours stay true.
The HD Essential gives 4,800 lux with a fixed wide beam, which is 8x more light on your work than a 60W bulb. On the HD Original and HD Pro the light engine is flicker-free and dims without steps, so you have a strong light for the darkest thread and can turn it down for everything else.
The only real test is to try one at home on your own sewing, with your own threads. You have up to 90 days, and if it is not for you, we collect it free from any UK mainland address and refund you.
Start my 90-day home trialMore questions
Should I choose the floor light or the table light?
Choose by where you sew. With no table beside you, the floor light lets you bring the head in from above while you turn your work in your hands, and it keeps your side table clear.
At a sewing table, in a sewing room or beside your machine, the table light sits right next to your work, so you can see the needle plate and the edge of your fabric as you feed it through. Both carry the same daylight, so either one gives you proper task lighting for sewing.
How do the lights compare?
Every light here carries the same Daylight Wavelength Technology™ and the same 5-year warranty. What changes is the control you get over the beam: how you shape it, dim it and direct it. Here are the three side by side.

Daylight made simple
Will it work beside my sewing machine?
Yes. Put the table light beside your machine, or stand the floor light by your sewing table, and bend the arm so the head sits just above your work. You then have daylight across the bed of your machine and your fabric as well as at the needle, so you can follow your seam line and match your thread to the cloth.
Does it have a magnifier?
No. None of the Serious Lights has a built-in magnifier, so if you use one now, you can keep using it under the light. What a Serious Light gives you is more light and truer colour on your work, which a magnifier cannot add.
What bulb does it take, and what does it cost to run?
All three sewing lights here run on LED, which is why a lamp this strong costs pennies a week. The HD Original and HD Pro use a replaceable light engine rather than a bulb, and the HD Essential takes a replaceable LED bulb.
It runs cool enough to sit beside you through a long evening's sewing, and you are not up a stepladder changing a bulb every year.
Why do they cost more than an ordinary lamp?
In a sewing light built to last, you pay for the full daylight spectrum, an arm and dimming that hold where you set them, a five-year warranty on the light and a lifetime warranty on the arm, and a forty-year-old company standing behind both. Most lamps are built down to a price, and we build Serious Lights to be repaired rather than thrown away. With the home trial, you can judge it at home, and if it is not for you, we collect it and refund you in full.
Why are dark threads harder to see once the evenings draw in?
In summer you can sew by a window well into the evening, but once the clocks go back most people work under a lamp from late afternoon. Under an ordinary lamp, dark threads and close shades are usually the first things people find hard to tell apart.
A Serious Light rebuilds daylight indoors, so your colours can look as clear on a winter evening as they do by a window in June.
How long does delivery take?
UK delivery is by DHL tracked courier and usually takes two to three working days. It is free with your code.It costs £12.95.
The Original and Essential arrive fully built, and the Pro's arm simply slots into its base. Either way, you plug it in and sew the same evening.
Bring daylight to your sewing this winter.
You can judge it on the dark evenings ahead, with your own threads and your own fabric.
