You should not have to give up the stitching you love.

When the navy and the black look the same under your lamp, when the needle takes four goes, when you fold the hoop away at half eight because you cannot see it, it is easy to fear the hobby is slipping away. As we get older our eyes need more light to see the same detail, and an ordinary front room lamp no longer gives enough. Put proper daylight on the work and the strain stops.

No more wrong-thread unpickingNavy and black stop reading as one colour, so you are not pulling out a morning's work.
No more losing your placeThe holes in the aida stop blurring together, so you stop counting the same row twice.
No more stopping at half eightYou can see the work in your own chair at night, so you are not waiting for the morning by the window.

Half Price A stitcher threading a needle at her needlework, the work lit by her Serious Readers light

“I can see to thread a needle again. The light is worth its weight in gold.”

Mrs Brittain, Manchester

Are you quietly doing less of the work you love?

It starts small. You leave the trickiest bit for the morning by the window. You go back to the big-count kits because you can manage them, and the 28-count piece you were excited about stays in the cupboard. You unpick a row you stitched in navy when it should have been black. Each time, a small voice wonders whether it is time to give it up.

It is not that the skill has left you. The lamp beside your chair was built to light a room, not the eye of a needle.

Unpicking again
Stopping too early

Stop carrying the work to the window.

Under a warm yellow bulb, two close greens turn into the same muddy tone, so you carry the piece across the room to be sure of the colour. Daylight Wavelength Technology™ shows colour the way noon daylight does. In independent lab tests it scores 98 out of 100, where ordinary daylight LEDs come in under 80. It is the brightness that lets you tell two close greens apart, or two close pinks, by your own lamp at night, so the shade you stitch by is the shade you chose, and you stop second-guessing it at the window the next morning.

Alex Pratt with a Serious Light
Alex Pratt, Founder of Serious Readers

It began on a sewing line.

I built the first Serious Light for my mum, whose bedside lamp blurred the print, and she finished her chapter that night. Our first big order, soon after, lit the Levi 501 line at Singer, so the machinists could see their own stitching.

Helping people see thread and needle has been the point from the first day. We still hand-build our lights in Aylesbury, and they are in over a million homes in 93 countries. The work in your lap is exactly what they were made for.

Stop counting the same row twice.

Under a dim lamp the aida holes blur into a flat mesh, so you lose your place and the pattern goes out by a stitch. With steady daylight on the cloth the squares are clean and countable, and you keep your line.

What changes when the strain stops.

Six things you notice the moment you put it over the work.

Dimmer wheel on the light head

From a soft glow to full daylight

A wheel takes the light from a soft glow to as bright as you need, so you are not stuck with a lamp too dim for the close work or too harsh for the room.Dim from a soft glow to full daylight, on a wheel.

Swivel joint and grab handle

Bring it over the hoop in seconds

The swivel joint and grab handle move the beam over your hoop or lap frame in a moment, so the daylight is on the work and not on the wall behind you.Move the beam over the hoop in seconds. No fiddly knobs.

Beam adjustment wheel

One corner, or the whole hoop

A second wheel narrows the beam to the part you are stitching, or widens it across the hoop and the chart together, so you are not straining at the edge of a small pool of light.Narrow the beam to a spot, or widen it across the hoop.

Flexible arm

No shadow over the next stitch

The arm bends to the angle you need and holds it, bringing the light over your shoulder so your own hand stops casting a shadow on the very hole you are working.Bends to your angle. No shadow on the work.

Plug and play, fully built

Stitch tonight, not just at the window

It arrives hand-built and ready. You unpack it, plug it in, and you are stitching by daylight the same evening, with no clamps, no knobs and nothing to set up.Hand-built. Plug it in and stitch by daylight tonight.

Considered detail throughout

Stop guessing the shade

Daylight Wavelength Technology™ shows colour the way daylight does, so every skein, every fat quarter and every bead is its true shade, not a warm-bulb version you have to check at the window. The true shade on every skein, not a warm-bulb guess.

An ordinary lamp, and the Serious Light.

Ordinary Lights
  • You stitch the wrong colourNavy and black flatten into one, and you find out in the morning.
  • You lose your placeThe aida holes blur, so you count the row twice and unpick.
  • Your hand is in your own lightThe lamp sits to one side, so a shadow falls on the next stitch.
  • You stop earlyBy half eight you put it away because you cannot see it.
Serious High Definition Light
  • You pick the right skeinNavy reads as navy on the chair arm, so nothing comes out in the morning.
  • You keep your placeThe holes stay clean and countable down the row.
  • No shadow on the workThe beam comes over your shoulder onto the hoop, not across it.
  • You carry on into the eveningThe light does not run out when the daylight does.

Questions? Fast answers.

No. It is the brightness that lets you separate two close shades, so the navy and the black on your chair arm read as two colours, and two close greens sit clearly apart by lamplight. The shade you stitch by at night is the shade you chose, so you are not pulling work out in the morning.

Yes. A second wheel widens the beam across the whole hoop and the chart together, or narrows it to a tight spot on the part you are stitching. For a cutting mat or a pinning layout laid out flat, the Table Light puts an even beam across the work.

Yes. The arm bends to the angle you need and stays there, so the Table Light clears the shadow the machine head throws over its own needle plate, and the Floor Light reaches over your shoulder onto a hoop or lap frame in the chair. There are no clamps or knobs to fight.

We never claim to fix anyone's eyes. As we get older our eyes need more light to see the same detail, and the daylight beam puts that light straight onto the work in your hands. Stitchers living with AMD, cataracts and age-related change tell us threads and stitches come through sharper and easier to tell apart. The 90-day trial lets you see it on your own needlework.

Daylight Wavelength Technology™ measures 98 out of 100 against noon daylight in independent lab tests, where ordinary daylight LEDs come in under 80. It is brighter, with no flicker and no glare, and that brightness is what lets you tell your navy thread from your black one. It is hand-built in Aylesbury to last decades, not the year or two of a bulb. The 90-day trial lets you put the two side by side.

Five to seven working days for UK delivery, by tracked courier. Each light is hand-built in Aylesbury before it ships, and arrives fully assembled, so you unpack it, plug it in and stitch by daylight the same evening.

The light is covered for five years, extendable to ten, including the LEDs and the electronics. If a manufacturing fault appears inside that time, we replace it. Damage from drops or misuse is not covered, but the 90-day trial protects you for the first months.

Try it for 90 days on your own needlework, in your own chair. If it is not for you, one call or email and we collect it from your door, free, and refund you in full. There is no quibble and no packing it back to a depot. The risk sits with us, not with you.

Get the piece out of the cupboard again.

Use code EM2648 at checkout, for a 90-day trial on your own needlework, free doorstep collection and a 5-year warranty. If it does not earn its place beside your chair, one call and we collect it, free. The clearance stock is limited, so this is while stocks last. Offer ends 30th June.
