Glaucoma Awareness Week · 6–12 July 2026
Make the most of the sight you have.
Around 1.1 million people in the UK are living with glaucoma. Half of them do not know they have it. This week is for catching it early, and for keeping the reading you love within reach.

What glaucoma does, and why testing wins
Glaucoma damages the optic nerve, usually from raised pressure inside the eye. It is common, it is manageable, and the earlier it is found the more sight is kept.
It starts at the edges
Glaucoma usually takes peripheral vision first, so the centre of the page can look perfectly fine while damage is being done around it. That is why people miss it.
It does not hurt
The most common form is painless and gradual. There is nothing to feel and, for a long time, nothing you would notice. Only a test shows it.
A test catches it years early
A routine eye test at any high-street optician checks eye pressure and the optic nerve. It is quick, painless, and free on the NHS if you are over 60.
Found early, it can usually be stopped
Drops, laser treatment and surgery can usually stop glaucoma progressing. Sight already lost does not come back, which is exactly why early beats late.
For support and guidance on living with glaucoma, Glaucoma UK (glaucoma.uk) runs a helpline and publishes clear, practical information. This page is about lighting, not medical advice.
A light cannot treat glaucoma. Here is what it can do.
I will be plain, because on a subject like this it matters. Glaucoma belongs to your optician and, if it is found, to proper treatment. Found early, it can usually be stopped from getting worse. So the single most useful thing you can do this week is book an eye test.
Print that used to be easy starts asking for more. More light, stronger contrast, less glare. A bare bulb gives it the opposite. Our lights put full-spectrum daylight on the page itself, shaded from your eyes, and for many readers that is enough to bring the small print back.
For Glaucoma Awareness Week, the lights on this page carry our Summer Sale prices. Take one home and judge it against your own bookshelf. If it loses, we collect it and refund you in full.
P.S. If it has been more than two years since your last eye test, please book one this week. It matters more than any lamp.

Your questions, answered
Straight answers about glaucoma and lighting
Can a reading light treat glaucoma?
No, and you should be wary of anything that suggests otherwise. Glaucoma needs diagnosis and treatment from eye-care professionals, and treatment works best when it starts early.
What the right light can do is help you make the most of the sight you have. Many people living with glaucoma find print needs more light and stronger contrast than it used to, and a full-spectrum light aimed at the page brings the detail back within reach for many readers.
Why does reading seem to need more light than it used to?
As we age, the eye needs several times more light to do the same close work, and glaucoma can reduce contrast sensitivity on top of that. The answer is not a harsher bulb, which mostly adds glare. It is more of the right light delivered onto the page itself: full-spectrum daylight, shaded from your eyes and aimed at what you are reading.
Which light should I choose?
The HD Original is our classic: full-spectrum daylight across the whole page, hand-built in Aylesbury. The HD Pro is the brightest and most adjustable light we make, with a beam you can shape from a tight pool to a wide flood and a dimmer with a memory. The HD Essential is the simplest and the least expensive: one switch and a wide, even pool of daylight.
If you are not sure, call us on 0800 032 9366 and we will tell you plainly which suits you, and whether a light is the answer at all.
Can I try one at home first?
Yes. The HD Original and HD Pro come with a 90-day risk-free home trial, and the HD Essential with a 30-day trial. If the light does not change the way you see, we arrange free collection from your door and refund you in full.
Where can I get help with glaucoma?
Start with an eye test at any high-street optician. It is painless, it detects glaucoma years before you would notice it yourself, and it is free on the NHS if you are over 60.
For support and information about living with glaucoma, Glaucoma UK at glaucoma.uk runs a helpline and publishes clear, practical guidance.
Book the eye test. Then put better light on the page.
The HD Original and HD Essential Floor Lights at half price, and the HD Pro Floor Light at £150 off. All judged in your own chair before you decide.
