Made for close examination
For a professional stamp valuer, the right light is an essential part of seeing what is really there. Colour fidelity, contrast and precision beam projection all affect how clearly you can see subtle shades, postmarks and fine printed detail.

“I wouldn’t rely on any other light.”George James, Head of Philately, Stanley Gibbons
“I am a stamp collector, my collection dates back to 1874. Your light is incredibly good and excellent in showing colours on my stamps that I have not seen for years.”Mr Bayley, North Yorkshire
The difference the right light makes
You sit down with a book, but the print is harder to follow than it was outside. At the kitchen table, two colours can almost look the same. A painting, sewing material or a crossword ask more of your eyes than they should. The room may be bright. The light shed on what you are doing is likely wrong.
Brightness is only the beginning. The make up of the light also determines how clearly you can distinguish colour, contrast, texture and fine detail. It matters where the beam falls, whether it creates glare, and whether you can position it to suit your eyes and the task in front of you. Two lights can seem equally bright yet feel entirely different to use.

This question has occupied us for forty years. When Alex’s mother asked for a better reading light, he bought thirty-seven lamps and found thirty-seven compromises. Some lit the room while others left the page in shadow. Some were difficult to position and others made colours look flat. She did not need a brighter light. She wanted to sit comfortably and focus on her reading and sewing.
We still begin with that need. A Serious Light combines a bespoke light source with high grade optics that precisely control the beam and direction so you can shed high fidelity light just where you need it. Colour fidelity is part of the design. It helps you see subtle differences that poor light can hide.
Find your place on the page and stay longer with the story. Choose the right paint colour, finish the stitch or see that important detail you were looking for. The light takes the strain, so you don’t have to.
All light is not created equal.
“It makes my other lights look yellow and dimmer. How nice to be able to read in such marvellous light.”Mr McDowall, Surrey
Who recommends Serious Lights?
More than 500 independent opticians choose to recommend Serious Lights for the benefits they provide to their patients. In the UK alone we work with 472 optical practices with 775 optometrists and 541 dispensing opticians, as well as domiciliary opticians who visit patients at home.
“Serious Lights are among the best lamps I’ve come across. They provide a natural, high quality light that improves visual comfort and clarity. Importantly, they can be easily adjusted and angled so that the light is directed onto the book or task at hand.”Lucy Winfield, Optometrist BSc (Hons) MCOptom, Braunton Eyeworks
