Alex & Classic halogen lights
Information for owners of older Serious halogen lights using bulbs 15156 and 15172.
Our early Alex and Classic reading lights were built around high‑performance halogen bulbs, including codes 15156 and 15172.
Government regulations have now phased out most domestic halogen bulbs. As a result, we can no longer source or supply these bulbs once our remaining stock is gone.
We stopped selling new halogen reading lights over ten years ago, so any Alex or Classic halogen light still in use is now well outside its original warranty period.
The next step depends on whether your current light is working or not.
If you already own a Serious LED light, you don’t need to do anything – this page only applies to older Alex and Classic halogen models.
You can carry on using your light as normal. There is no safety issue with continuing to use an existing halogen bulb.
When the bulb eventually fails, we will not be able to supply a like‑for‑like halogen replacement. At that point, the practical option is to upgrade your light head to LED.
In many cases we can upgrade the head of your Alex or Classic halogen light to our latest High Definition LED technology.
We usually keep your existing base and arm, and replace the halogen head with a modern LED unit, so your light looks familiar but performs like our current range.
An upgrade moves your older Alex or Classic halogen light onto the same LED technology we use in our latest Serious reading lights.
Clear, even light for reading
High Definition LED gives a crisp, even beam to help text and fine detail stand out, with less eyestrain.
Lower running costs
LED uses a fraction of the electricity of a comparable halogen bulb, so it is cheaper to run day to day.
Runs cooler
There is no very hot filament bulb in the middle of the beam, so the head runs cooler in normal use.
Long service life
LED light engines are designed for many years of typical use, so bulb changes are rare.
