Home from home – The Serious stand at Hay

The Hay Festival is a unique phenomenon - a fabulous combination of intellect and irreverence, wisdom and wit. From early festivals held variously in a pub car park and a primary school, the event now draws 85,000 people from across the world. This year marked the Festival’s 30th anniversary, bringing together an array of scribes and sages to share their thoughts on a diverse array of subjects, from science to literature, technology to film, and architecture to art. Stephen Fry, Tracy Emin, Germaine Greer, Graham Norton, Sir Tony Robinson, Sandi Toksvig and Ken Loach were among the celebrities who took to the stage to lead conversation events. While Eddie Izzard, Will Young, Amy Macdonald, Brian May, Marcus Brigstocke and Shappi Khorsandi provided music and mirth. In amongst that stellar array, somewhere between The Summer House and the Tata Tent, was the 10-day temporary home of Serious – Stand 15.

A Shed-Full of Great Feedback

The Serious Stand proved to be a magnet for serious readers for the duration of the event. In particular visitors were intrigued by “The Shed” – a reading booth based on a garden shed which offered a perfect darkened environment in which to see the spectacular difference a Serious reading light makes. We already knew that those who are serious about reading love Serious lights – fans include James Delingpole, Artemis Cooper, James Whale, Sir Richard Needham, Andrew Lycett and Lady Pamela le Bailly - but the response to trying the light at the Festival was beyond our wildest dreams. One guest after another was amazed by the impact of Serious lights by comparison with conventional reading lights, and to date over 80 lights have been ordered either at the show or as a result of trying Serious lights at the stand.

Roll on next year

The visual theme for the stand – a contemporary garden setting complete with shed – was the brainchild of our founder Alex. The project was co-ordinated by our innovations champion Josh who was ably assisted by Rob, Leslie, Michael, Helen, Robbie, Richard, Tessa, Jennifer and Nathan from the Serious team. Serious lights have proved to be so popular with the well-read Hay audience, that we will certainly be making an appearance at next year’s Festival. And what will next year’s theme be? Watch this space…
